UPIK currently offers one diploma programme called the Diploma in Petroleum Engineering. It has been accredited by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE). It is an Upstream programme ie it focuses on how oil or gas is made to flow safely from deep down the ground, up to the surface.

After consultations with our Partners, it was agreed that this Diploma be reformulated and renamed the Diploma in Upstream Petroleum Operations. The process of reformulating it has started and it is hoped that in the very near future it will be offered along with four others at both the diploma and certificate levels. These programmes will focus on the following areas:

  • Upstream (Production from the Reservoir to the Surface)
  • Midstream (Pipeline, Refining)
  • Instrumentation and Controls
  • Downstream Operations (Supply Chain to Consumers)
  •   Health Safety and the Environment.

To be admitted to the current Diploma in Petroleum Engineering the candidate should have at least a Principal Pass in Mathematics and Physics, both obtained at the same sitting. Given the complexity of the engineering used in producing oil and gas, it was decided that both Chemistry and Technical Drawing be considered as desirable subjects while Geography and Economics are rated as relevant subjects if they are done at A’level.

The most salient features of the Diploma being offered currently include courses in:

  • Health Safety and the Environment; Impacts of Oil & Gas on Biodiversity.
  • Drilling Operations:  Well Planning & Control; Well Fluids; Casing Design; Casing & Cementing; Drill String Calculations.
  • Well Completions & Production
  • Petroleum Geology and Geophysics
  • Principles and Regulations for Electrical Installation
  • Pipeline Welding & Fabrication: Theory and Practice.
  • Bench Work Practice
  • Materials Technology & Applications
  • Engineering Mathematics
  • Mechanical Engineering Drawing: Pipe Work.

The objective of the current Diploma is to introduce the trainee to the main Oil & Gas concepts, processes and procedures, to enable him/her decide the on the area of specialization he/she may wish to pursue, to become field-ready for direct employment by the Oil & Gas Industry.

The current two-year Diploma programme includes two industrial attachments, each lasting two months. The objective of these attachments is to gauge/increase the trainee’s capacity to apply what has been learnt, to the real world of work. Ideally these attachments should take place and be supervised by Oil Companies, but because Production has not yet started, trainees are sent to Firms whose activities are of relevance to the Oil & Gas Sector ie potential Service Providers for the Oil & Gas Industry.

So, if the content of our training interests you, do not hesitate to contact the Academic Registrar UPIK, P. O. Box 187, Bweyale, Kiryandongo.

The Uganda Petroleum Institute Kigumba Guild Representative Council is a collaborative link between the students’ body and the Uganda Petroleum Institute Kigumba Administration and abbreviated as GRC. It is headed by a Guild President who is the overall leader and democratically elected by the students in accordance with the existing guidelines in the Guild Constitution.
